What We Do

BHY provides a rich environment for learning in a place that feels like home.

A playful and nurturing place, BHY supports each child’s intellectual and physical growth while also cultivating social and emotional development. It is common to see teachers speaking with students at eye-level, asking questions and listening respectfully as each child answers. It is also common to hear peals of happy laughter on the playground, and to see fascinated concentration in students practicing their new writing skills or creating art projects for an upcoming holiday celebration.

We believe that children construct their own knowledge through meaningful relationships and experiences.  Because opportunities for discovery are based on children’s interests and grow out of their existing knowledge, our curriculum emerges, in part, from those interests. As a result, our curriculum does not always look the same from one classroom to the next, or one year to the next; it is adapted to meet the curiosities and learning styles of each child.

BHY has rolling admissions. Please contact our office for current space availability and wait list information.

Toddler Program

Our toddler program is for children 18-months to 2 years and is designed to introduce children to school in a fun, loving environment. The group focuses on social and emotional growth along with nurturing the development of each unique child.

Preschool Program

The preschool classrooms are for children 2-5 years old and are designed with a balance of age and gender. Our classrooms offer spaces where children can engage in music, construction play, art, science, reading, and cooking. The teachers focus on skills and major concepts for each developmental level as they incorporate these overarching themes into daily lessons.

Pre-K Program

In our pre-k classrooms we offer a curriculum focused on kindergarten readiness. Skills in language arts, writing, math, science, and conflict resolution are fostered, making the transition to kindergarten easier for the whole family.

The Basics:

We offer a 12-month program, beginning in July and ending in June. The “school year” runs from September to June. In July and August, our programming is set up as a “summer camp” with every week or two having a different theme.

The preschool is open from 7:30am until 5:30pm, Monday through Friday. The day is divided into four sections: 7:30 to 9:00 am (Morning Care); 9:00am to 1:00pm (Core Day); 1:00 to 3:30pm (Early Afternoon); and 1:00 to 5:30pm (Full Afternoon).

The specific schedule varies from class to class and always includes activities, outside time, snack and lunchtime. A sample of the Core Day & Afternoon Program schedule is as follows:

9:00 – 10:30 am Learning through Indoor activities and Art/Craft Projects
10:30 – 11:00 am Clean-up, Bathroom/Diapering, Snack
11:00 am – 12:00 pm Outside Time
12:00 – 12:30 pm Lunchtime
12:30 – 1:00 pm Group Time
1:00 – 3:30 pm Nap or Afternoon Enrichment Program, Snack Time
3:30 – 5:00 pm Outside Time
5:00 – 5:30 pm Clean-up, Bathroom/Diapering, Snack

At 1pm, children who nap are given the opportunity to sleep. Children who no longer sleep during the day are allowed a short rest period and then are engaged in our afternoon program from 1:30-2:30pm.

Good nutrition is important, and we provide healthy snacks each day at BHY.  Parents may send lunch from home, or purchase a healthy catered option 1 to 5 days per week.

Our snacks and meals are prepared each day from fresh ingredients and include very few processed foods. Lunch includes a protein, complex carbohydrate, vegetable, and fruit.  Out of respect for Jewish dietary laws all meals will either be meat or dairy, and BHY does not serve pork or shellfish.

Because of the severity of reaction in children with nut allergies, BHY is nut-free school. We do not serve any products with nuts of nut derivatives (e.g. peanut oil) in them. We may serve food that has been processed at a facility which also processes nuts.  Please do not send any nuts or nut products to school with your child.

If your child has a food allergy, we will not serve products containing the offending item and will request that families with children in your child’s class not bring any food containing the allergen. While we cannot promise to accommodate every situation, we will do our very best to honor your family’s nutritional needs.
